Caleb

Let me recap a little.

When Caleb was born he didn't pass his hearing. The State of Kansas now has an outline for children who don't pass. Like at 3 months of age we had to have a plan and at 6 months of age be carrying out that plan. Well, he is now almost 2 1/2 and we have yet to pass a hearing test. He isn't deaf, we do know that. But he speaks all jibberish. He has had 2 sets of tubes so far. We had been going to a specialist here in Topeka and for the past year it has been a little frustrating. This is the same place Jonathan and Noah went too and for them it was great. Every few months we go in, Caleb gets a little unhappy when we walk into this specific assistants office, and she immediately cancels any testing. She never allows me to quiet him or hold him to comfort, nothing. Yet we were still paying our co pays. So really I was just paying to go and see her so Caleb could cry. I have asked several other parents about the testing he needs done and were surprised he hadn't had it done yet. So I finally talked to our pediatrician and got a referral for a specialist in Kansas City at Children's Mercy Hospital. This is the same place we take Noah to and we really love it there.

Yesterday was his first appointment there. We got to meet the actual Doctor and she was the one who did the testing. Yes testing! Can you believe on our first visit she ran tests?! Caleb liked her which was a bonus. Right from the start she was calm, easy to talk to, answered all of our questions, etc. So he had one hearing test done yesterday and he passed but not with flying colors. He is at normal to below normal. And she tested both ears at the same time so if one wasn't as good the other ear could make up for it. She also tested his canals and they are not open. This will probably mean more tubes but she wants to do a few more tests before going to surgery again. She gave me things to do here at home with him to prepare him for the next appointment. For me this is just crazy! To actually get answers and help is just unheard of. I still can't believe how proactive she is, was. So, he isn't hearing as well as we had hoped but we kind of expected that but to finally and I mean finally, have a great Doctor who is helping us, made yesterday's appointment a great one!

Caleb and I have been working really hard on the alphabet and he has probably 6 letters he can pick out and say and recognize them anywhere. Actually, saying his letters is pretty clear and about the only clear things he says. Mom comes out clear and Dadda. But nothing else. Every once in a while he will say something super clear but he can't ever repeat it.

So we are praising God today!
